Bird behavior
Observable actions or activity patterns of individual birds or bird populations, including movement, flight, flocking, migration, vocalization, feeding, roosting, reproductive activity, and changes in their spatial or temporal distribution. Within WIVVI, bird behavior may be measured through direct observation, acoustic monitoring, tracking devices, radar, or camera systems. Behavioral change alone does not establish an earthquake precursor or causal connection with seismic activity.
Dairy-cow milk yield
The quantity of milk produced by an individual dairy cow or dairy herd during a defined period, typically measured daily. Within WIVVI, this concept covers objectively recorded changes in milk yield investigated as possible physiological responses to environmental, geophysical, electromagnetic, chemical, husbandry, health, or other stressors. A change in milk yield alone does not identify its cause or constitute an earthquake precursor.
Electromagnetic anomalies
Departures from an expected or established baseline in measured electric fields, magnetic fields, electromagnetic emissions, geomagnetic conditions, radio-frequency propagation, or related ionospheric signals. Within WIVVI, this concept includes ground-based and satellite-recorded anomalies across frequency ranges such as ULF, ELF, and VLF. An electromagnetic anomaly may result from natural environmental variation, solar or geomagnetic activity, lightning, human technology, instrument effects, or other causes; its detection alone does not establish an earthquake precursor, predictive signal, or causal connection with seismic activity.
Honey-bee colony acoustic activity
Sounds and vibrations generated within a honey-bee colony, measured using microphones, accelerometers, or other acoustic sensors and analyzed through properties such as amplitude, frequency spectrum, temporal pattern, and statistical variability. Within WIVVI, this concept includes objectively recorded changes in hive acoustics investigated in relation to environmental, biological, electromagnetic, geophysical, or other external conditions. Changes in colony acoustic activity may reflect many factors—including temperature, weather, colony health, queen status, swarming, predators, human disturbance, and equipment effects—and do not alone identify an earthquake precursor or establish a causal connection with seismic activity.
Collective animal activity
The combined or aggregated activity pattern of multiple animals considered as a group rather than as isolated individuals. Within WIVVI, this concept includes sensor-derived measures of movement or behavioural change across one or more species. It does not, by itself, imply that the activity is caused by an earthquake or constitutes a reliable precursor.
Earthquake occurrence
The occurrence of a seismically recorded event caused by a sudden release of energy within Earth, characterized by an origin time, hypocentre, magnitude, and associated ground motion. Within WIVVI, earthquake occurrence is treated as an independently measured geophysical event against which other observations may be compared; it does not imply that those observations caused or predicted the event.
Schumann resonance
A set of naturally occurring extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic resonances sustained primarily by global lightning activity within the conductive cavity between Earth’s surface and the lower ionosphere. The fundamental mode is commonly near 7.8 Hz, with additional higher-frequency modes whose exact frequencies and amplitudes vary with cavity and ionospheric conditions.
